Death of a Prominent Local Businessman

Mr. Howard Parker, long-time businessman and owner of Parker’s Furniture, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2014 at his home.  Mr. Parker was a fine gentlemen and fixture on the town square for decades working in other businesses before starting Parker Furniture in the 80’s.  He will be missed!

HEADLAND…William Howard Parker, a resident of Headland, died Sunday evening, March 9, 2014 at his home. He was 88

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 12, 2014, in the Worship Center of the First Baptist Church of Headland with Dr. Cecil M. Sanders, Jr. and Reverend Ricky Sowell officiating. Burial will follow in the Headland Baptist Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 11:00 A.M. in the Worship Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Headland, “Bridge To Tomorrow” Building Fund, 301 E. Church Street, Headland, AL 36345.

Mr. Parker was a lifelong resident of Headland, son of the late Ples Odus Parker and Ira Bernice Kelly Parker. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Parker retired as the owner and operator of Parker Furniture in Headland. In earlier years, he was employed by Solomon Hardware. Mr. Parker was a member of the First Baptist Church of Headland for sixty years where he served as a Deacon and formerly taught a Sunday school class and Training Union. He was a member of the Headland Lions Club, and in earlier years, was active in the Headland High School Band Boosters.

Mr. Parker was preceded in death by his wives, Murline McCoy Parker and Dorothy Skipper Parker, and a brother, Ples N. Parker.

Surviving relatives include a daughter, Barbara Hayden (Wyman Gamble), Headland; a son, Tommy Parker (Jackie Lipscomb), Gulf Shores, AL; a sister, Connie Kirkland, Tallahassee, FL; three grandchildren, Christopher de la Croix (Melissa), Laina Parker Posey (Neville), and Kyle Parker (Alexandria Sheckler); three great-grandchildren, Colin de la Croix, Bria and Olivia Posey; several nieces and nephews including a special niece, Jeanine McCoy Holman.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Christopher de la Croix, Kyle Parker, Oyette Taylor, Eddie Thomas, Bob Frank Williams, Jimmy Morris, Larry Faison, Tim Grace and Terry Grimes. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Jack Bridges Sunday School Class.
